Seeing / Mentalizing

 

It has been proposed that visual system is divided into two processing streams: the ventral pathway (including frontal areas and the occipitotemporal cortex) is thought to be involved into objec and people recognition adn the dorsal pathway (including frontal and parietal cortices) is involved in localizing object and people, analysing spatial relations and movements (e.g, Sala et al, 2003; Nakamura et al, 2000; Rocha et al, 1997; Wallentin et al, 2006). The frontal regions of both the ventral and dorsal streams are considered part of the Working Memory (WM) and the Executive Attention Control (e.g. Cabeza et al, 2000, Lepsien et al, 2006; Lundstrom et al, 2005, Rocha et al, 2004).

 

Here we assume that

 

a: FM1 is associated with WM and the Executive Control of Attention required to visual scene recognition,

b: FM2 is associated with the dorsal pathway activity and

c: FM3 is associated with the ventral pathway processing.

 

Mentalizing is the process of implicit attribution of intentions and other mental states (Frith et al, 2003). It is supposed to involve 3 main brain regions: TheTemporal Pole (TP); the Posterior Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS) and te Medial Prefrontal Cortex (MPFC).

 

The video used to generate the FMs is about intentions and mental states in killing a mosquito that is harmful to a baby. In this context, it may be hypothesized that FM1 may be associated with MPFC activity and that FM3 may involve with TP and STS processing related with mentalizing.
